You might have been in the Palais last week, or you might have been streaming online – or maybe you had FOMO and were just watching your social feeds. But I can tell you that the most insightful, and authentic conversations with leaders from yesterday, today and tomorrow happened in the classroom of the Cannes Lions Brand Marketer Academy.
🎨 Creativity is a System, Not a Spark
Great creative work is built through constraint, rehearsal and bold thinking — not inspiration.
JaBaris Swain: “Constraint is the canvas.” / “We don’t plan to fail; we plan so failure doesn’t get to improvise.” James Hurman: “Uncreativity costs much more.” Uncreative work isn’t safer — it actively underperforms. Marie Julie Gerbauld: “Fall in love with the problem, not the idea.” Luis Camano: “Please never be boring.” Creativity doesn’t live in a job title — it lives in how you think. Marc Pritchard: Variety, Volume & Velocity.
🤖 AI: Turbocharger, Not Replacement
AI raises the ceiling — but only for people who are already exceptional and deeply opinionated.
Marc Pritchard: “AI = turbo charger of human creativity.” Sean Thielen-Esparza (Anthropic): “You need to be extremely capable and extremely opinionated.” Build a personal utopia of taste — a database of what you love and what inspires you. Alex Cuevas: “Taste is the MOAT.” Lex: “You’re competing against marketers using AI better than you — not the tech itself.”
📊 Brand Building: Play the Long Game
Consistency through downturns wins. Memory structures matter. Data has limits — gut still counts.
Marian Lee: “It’s not a strategy to not support your brand and hope competition doesn’t catch up.” / “Even with data, you still need a strong gut hypothesis. That’s our magic.” Karen Nelson-Field: “We’ve forgotten about memory structures and real human metrics.” James Hurman: FAME and creativity as the real drivers of business impact. Victoria Sjardin: “Brands can be timeless but they have to be timely in culture.” (e.g. Lego, Heinz) CMO Panel: “Get selective amnesia of the bad times — be a goldfish.”
🌍 Culture is the Ultimate Cheat Code
Culture is how we make meaning — and brands must contribute to it, not extract from it.
Dr Marcus Collins: “Culture is the biggest cheat code. Consumption is a cultural act. Brands are a vessel of meaning.” / “Start with the soul, not with the sale.” / “Everything popular today was once niche.” / “We see the world the way we are — not the way it is.” Marcus Collins: “Culture ≠ Popularity. Culture squashes scale.” Brands with an agenda to extract from culture outperform those that exploit it. Victoria Sjardin: “Don’t look at a brand as the consumer — that way you’ll work harder for them.” Gael de Talhouet: “Each company has its own currency and culture — learn it to succeed.” CMO Panel: “We’re in the business of humanity. Never be boring.”
💪 Confidence & GRIT: The Untaught Skills
Confidence is learnable. Resilience is a practice. Clarity and self-awareness are leadership superpowers.
Helen Tiffany: “Everything comes from confidence.” / “Confidence can be misinterpreted for fearlessness — it’s okay to be afraid.” / “When you’re doubting yourself, look at the facts. What’s true and what are you making up about yourself?” Mia Rafowitz & Meryl Blau: GRIT = Groundwork, Resilience, Intensity, Temper. Push hard — but also recharge. Lex / Marian: “Clear is kind, unclear is unkind.” Alumni: “Be hard on the work, but kind on the people.”
🚀 Own Your Career — Intentionally
Nobody manages your career for you. Follow curiosity, build skills, think ahead, never burn bridges.
Marian Lee: “Be intentional about everything you do. Think the long game. Don’t suffer in a role you know isn’t for you. I don’t let myself be cheaper.” Lex: “Build skills, not job titles. Think 2 steps ahead and manifest it.” Victoria Sjardin: “Curiosity is free. Everything you have to offer is a superpower to someone else.” Ryan Parkhurst: “Lead without authority.” Gael de Talhouet: “Embrace life where you are. Don’t be afraid to manage up.” Luis Camano: “You don’t need to be a genius — you just need attitude, observation and listening.” Alumni: “You are here because of you.”
Six themes. One extraordinary week. 🦁
